This is Corn Belt's contract forestry crews taking down the last of our big elm trees. It had many dead branches and they were going to trim it so it didn't fall on our service wire - like the other one. We had them take it all the way down because of the expense to us when it completely falls. the tree wasn't as rotten as the other one and it was estimated to be from 150-200 years old. Sad to take it down but nice to know it wouldn't fall on one of us while in the yard or a car driving in the driveway or on the house or power lines. Rationalizing the deed.

They did a good job. Two crews had it done in about five hours. Didn't damage anything, cut and stacked the "fire size" branches (about 30 feet three rows deep) and cut up the large trunk into pieces we can "almost" move with the Kabuta. Left us three very large loads of decent mulch in the process. I've always heard mushrooms grow where there is decomposing elm trees - maybe I'll have entire flower beds full of mushrooms in a few years. Another rationalization.
Sure looks bare out there without those two elms. I'm sure the row of old fashioned white lilacs will do much better without the shade as will the two rows of evergreen windbreaks. Trying to rationalize taking it down I guess.
