Basement wall

In talking to our contractor, Arnie, who will be taking out the old basement wall and replacing with one that is structurally sound, he is running behind. . . The rain has put him about a month and a half behind.

Tentatively, he is talking about the end of this month but any rain will put him farther out than that. Drats!

Everything you see in the picture has been moved except some of the rocks and the big pines. We hated to move the pines before he comes as the hole could be a funnel for the rain entering the basement and further wash out the wall. On the flip side, we may as well enjoy them because they don't have a good chance of surviving the move anyway.

Jerry and I got everything out of the basement last weekend that could be thrown away (why do I keep that stuff in the first place), would be in the way or would need to be out of there to be cleaned after the work.

Now really, who needs three fondue pots??? Who needs a gallon of dried strawberry house paint that I got for 25 cents? We had saved all the original window sashes from the house because we watch way too much HGTV. After removing the beautiful 100+ year old window hardware - they are history. If someone ever buys the house, they will never say "Oh look here are the rotting, broken, original window sashes - let's take out the new energy efficient ones and make the house original!" Well, let's just say beat me with a square nail - 2009 was the let's clean out and throw away year.

Jerry and I may never have things so cleaned out that my "look" will be contemporary - I don't have the DNA ability to go minimalist. We lovingly call it the "Ward DNA." Apparently, Susan has this DNA although she is fighting it right now, too. Ian went the opposite and can clean things out with no worries. Trent seems to float somewhere in between. I think sentimentality is the key to the trait.

Our family does keep the whole Ward traits on saving stuff in the back of our mind and that does allow us to throw away even when it causes some pang of "what if". It's a fine line between family memories and keeping cottage cheese cartons. The basement had moved towards the cartons look but is now - shall we say "BETTER."
