Freedom House Board Meeting

We start the fiscal year this month and the Board have some tough budget challenges this year. The State is talking about cutting funding to the women and children shelters by 50%. Although both sides of the issue are complicated, we have decided we shall hang in there with full services until next month (when things should be more defined.)
A place that serves people who have serious personal, health, or life issues always has a unique staff. We have found that most have some connection to the issues and it isn't just a job - it is a calling.
Staff also must be highly trained - even volunteers. Typically, those that are serving the front line needs of others in these situations are there for reasons other than to get rich.
Freedom House also depends upon donors, as does most social service organizations. To date, giving has not decreased but we realize there may be short funding in this area in the future if the state of the economy continues to spread. The current rate of donations would not cover the 50% decrease in State funding.
In hard economic times, domestic abuse increases as funding decreases. We have our summer work cut out for us as we are committed to keeping the facility open and at the service level that is needed so desperately.
Other things: Our fall fund raiser will be held October 16 at the Annawan Convention Center. This is the first benefit ever held in Henry County and we hope to attract more support from the county (out of five we serve) that has the largest number of clients for us.
It will be a fun evening with a 70's disco theme and will include dinner, dancing and auction. Donations are being accepted for auction items, money and in-kind gifts.
I was elected Vice President, an easy officer position but with the plan of becoming president in three years. Although it is a working/volunteer Board, we do not supervise anyone except the Executive Director. Our main function is to set and administer policy. Therein lies the responsibility.
